LP hires wrestling coach

Beky Beaton - Daily Herald
The Lone Peak High School administration has announced the hiring of Eric Spencer as head wrestling coach. "We interviewed a number of well-qualified candidates for the position," said Rex Brimhall, assistant principal over athletics.
"We liked coach Spencer's outstanding background and experience as well as his enthusiasm and proven organizational ability."
Spencer is a product of coach Darold Henry's program at Pleasant Grove High School, where he won a 4A state title in 1995 in the 130 weight class.
He placed in the state tournament both his sophomore and junior years, and the Vikings won the state title all four years while he was in the program.
He also served as head coach of the Pleasant Grove Junior High wrestling team from 2000 to 2002 and holds a Bronze Level coaches certification from USA Wrestling.
After serving an LDS mission to Chicago, Spencer worked as a counselor at Provo Canyon School for about 15 months.
Since then, he's been employed in various jobs in the construction industry. He earned a bachelor's degree in business management from the University of Phoenix earlier this year.
The details are still being worked out, but it's anticipated that Spencer will join the Lone Peak faculty in the Alpine School District mentoring program next school year and work toward getting his teaching certificate.
Spencer said coaching and teaching have been in his plans for a long time and that he always wanted to do both. "I learned a lot when I was wrestling, such as a work ethic and integrity," the coach explained.
"I really enjoy being around young people and want to be able to give them the same learning opportunities I had.
"I want to help all the wrestlers set a goal and work toward that goal," he continued. "I hope that many of them will have the desire to go on and wrestle in college, and I want to assist them in getting there."

Congratulations Coach! We love you.
